Case 5.2: Drone

When the Doctor’s mobile emitter gets a Borg nanoprobe infusion and steals neck DNA from Ensign Mulchaey (just roll with it), the resulting Baby Borg puts Seven’s emotional well-being right back in the crosshairs. Can she impart her emerging humanity onto the most tricked-out drone to ever live? Will Janeway get impatient and toss the kid out the nearest airlock? Is “Drone” GOOD... or is it GARBAGE?

Case 4.27: Season Four Finale

In fall of 1997, a perfectly good Star Trek show mysteriously disappeared and was replaced by a bad Star Trek show. Then the good show came back, but only a few weeks passed before the bad one returned. Then it was good again. Then bad. Then kind of good with some bad mixed in there. What unseen force drove Season 4 of Star Trek: Voyager to the absolute brink of inconsistency? The members of Judge Later’s Space Court will try to unravel the mystery, but only the Patreon Grand Jury can deliver justice. This week, it’s the baffling case of the season 4 finale… on “Unresolved Enigmas.”

Case 4.26: Hope and Fear

The vengeful chickens of “Scorpion, Part II” come home to roost in the final episode of season 4! A suspiciously helpful alien guides the crew to a suspiciously convenient gift from the Federation: a quantum slipstream ship, capable of transwarp speeds with negligible salamander-related side effects! Will Voyager finally find its way home, leaving the next three seasons to cover Tom and Harry’s adventures and gelato magnates? Will Janeway waltz her crew into a shortcut-shaped trap? Is “Hope and Fear” GOOD… or is it GARBAGE?

Case 4.25: One

Seven of Nine becomes One of Two so that she and the Doctor can shepherd Voyager’s crew through a three-month nebula nap! Will she discover that one truly is the loneliest number?  Can two be as bad as one? Is it the loneliest number since the number one? Is “One” GOOD... or is it GARBAGE?

Case 4.24: Demon

Harry Kim grows a sassy backbone just in time to have that sassy backbone cloned by a puddle of goo on a planet that looks like a cross between Mars and a Renaissance depiction of Hell... and it all ends up making even less sense than that sentence! Will Harry and Tom survive the Demon-class planet, or will they perish in a flurry of bro quips? Will the scarcity of deuterium ever again be mentioned as a plot point, or will it join the photon torpedo count in the graveyard of abandoned subplots? Is “Demon” GOOD... or is it GARBAGE?

Case 4.23: Living Witness

Reactivated 700 years into the future, a backup copy of the Doctor must somehhhhowwwwwcrrrrr::::SUBSPACE ANOMALY DETECTE::D::DDD@#’’’ALL HAIL THE EMPRESS. GLORY TO THE TERRAN EMPIRE. The galaxy’s one true arbiter of justice and decency convenes to punish another suspect cultural offering! An efficient, completely reasonable, and charmingly cruel version of Janeway is proven to be nothing more than an ephemeral dream of dodgy record keeping! Will the Doctor’s cloud backup continue mewling about his pathetic affection for historical accuracy? Will the prosecution score yet another unnecessarily violent blow for the glory of the Empire? Is episode 4.23 “Living Witness” PERMISSIBLE… or is it PUNISHABLE BY DEATH?

Case 4.22: Unforgettable

Voyager encounters a wild Virginia Madsen in need of asylum and some sweet Chakotay smoocherinos! What follows is a classic tale of lost love, immediately rediscovered love, and, of course, xenophobic alien marshalls with weird memory cloaking powers. Will Chakotay find the temporary happiness he so richly deserves? Will we find ourselves wishing this episode had a biological engram filter to help us forget that we ever watched it? Is “Unforgettable” GOOD... or is it GARBAGE?

Case 4.21: The Omega Directive

This episode of Voyager does not exist, and any assertion to the contrary is a violation of Federation operational security mandates, the accepted interplanetary norms of Star Trek podcasting, and the express wishes of your mother. But let’s say, for the sake of argument, that this episode DID exist, would Janeway be able to carry out her mission to save sub-space while convincing the crew that the giant OMEGA symbols plastered on every console screen are nothing to worry about? Would Seven be surprisingly chill about participating in the murder of her own god? Would “The Omega Directive” be GOOD... or would it be GARBAGE?

Case 4.20: Vis á Vis

Disgruntled Tom Paris makes friends with an alien who possesses the amazing ability to mimic genomes in the complete absence of any motive to do so! Will he succeed in taking Tom’s life (and sweet Camaro) for a super bodacious joyride? Can a third-act turn take this episode from “kinda boring” to “competent but kinda boring?” How does Julia Roberts factor into any of this? Is “Vis a Vis” GOOD… or is it GARBAGE?

Case 4.19: The Killing Game - Part 2

Radio Free Voyager brings you more thrilling updates from the front lines as the battle for Ste. Claire spills into the 24th century! Can the ship be saved? Will Chakotay go full Wolfenstein all over the digitized Nazi hordes? Will Tom finally put a bullet in Harry for his substandard knowledge of 1940’s pin-up girls? Is “The Killing Game, Part 2” a TRIUMPH FOR AMERICAN VALUES... or is it DEEPLY CONCERNING?

Case 4.18: The Killing Game - Part 1

Yes, folks, it’s another thrilling episode of Radio Free Voyager, bringing the voice of Sweet Lady Liberty to our fightin’ boys at the Front, our erstwhile sojourners in the Delta Quadrant, and all you good people listening from home! This week: A gang of fascist nasties traps our heroes in a holodeck simulation of occupied France! What’s a holodeck? What’s a Star Track? Who the hell knows! Gene Roddenberry is still somewhere flying B-17s for the Army Air Corps! Will our heroes escape the clutches of their captors? Will Old Glory grace the skies over Sainte Claire? Is “The Killing Game, Part 1,” a VICTORY FOR AMERICAN VALUES… or is it DEEPLY CONCERNING?

Case 4.17: Retrospect

***Content Warning: The following episode deals with topics of sexual assault, mental and physical abuse, trauma, and rape culture.***

The People v. Star Trek: Voyager drops the schtick to discuss “Retrospect,” an episode that began as a bad-faith critique of the mental health profession and aged into a bad-faith “cautionary tale” about how society handles allegations of sexual assault. It’s not appropriate subject matter for jokes, but it is an opportunity to reflect on responsible media creation, responsible media consumption, and how—even in a series centered on strong, competent, and dynamic women—this kind of crap is always there, waiting to slip through the filter.

Case 4.16: Prey

Strap in for an episode that brings you not one but TWO colossal diplomatic failures! Janeway ruins a chance for peace with the Hirogen! Seven ruins a chance for peace with Species 246867whatever! Will Janeway and Seven ruin a chance for peace… with each other? Will Paris retire from Starfleet to do standup on cruise ships? Can anyone explain gravity on this show? Is “Prey” GOOD... or is it GARBAGE?

Case 4.15: Hunters

Seven of Nine is hunting for emails in the ancient alien inbox! The Hirogen are hunting for Federation trophy spines! Harry Kim is hunting for assurance that his parents haven’t replaced him with a Cocker Spaniel! Can this episode track and bag a good verdict? Will Seven and Tuvok escape the scariest Predator knockoffs this side of Yautja Prime? Is Mark Johnson the biggest piece of dog crap in Trek history? Yes. But is “Hunters” GOOD... or is it GARBAGE?

Case 4.14: Message in a Bottle

Incompetent Romulan hit squads! Prototype warships with detachable parts! A regrettable-in-hindsight guest star! Yes, this episode of Voyager has all the things you’ve been hoping for, but will that be enough to save it from the multi-vectored assault of justice? Can two EMHs succeed where one EMH probably would have also succeeded? Is the Doctor too big to send as an attachment? Is “Message in a Bottle” GOOD... or is it GARBAGE?

Case 4.13: Waking Moments

Voyager drifts into hostile territory and drifts off into a collective dream prison constructed by evil, sleepy aliens! Can Chakotay and the Doctor save the crew from the Sandman’s grasp? Will Tuvok’s exposed, muscular torso derail Season 4’s narrative arc? If those aliens are asleep all the time, how do they handle bathroom stuff? Is “Waking Moments” GOOD... or is it GARBAGE?

Case 4.12: Mortal Coil

Season 4 dials up the existential darkness as Voyager’s resident clown goes on a journey of broken faith and depressing confrontation with mortality! Can Chakotay save him from his nihilistic spiral? Will Neelix rediscover his will to live in time to give Ensign Wildman five freaking minutes to herself before bedtime? Is Tom Paris a ninja turtle? Is “Mortal Coil” GOOD... or is it GARBAGE?
